Why Hunt in Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe remains a serious dangerous-game country: the Zambezi Valley, Hwange-adjacent Matetsi, and the south-east Lowveld conservancies still produce buffalo, elephant and leopard hunts with old-school PH culture. The country also has ranch and CAMPFIRE communal hunts that feel nothing like a Valley fly-camp. Name the region or you will be comparing apples to mopane.

Save Valley and neighbouring conservancies offer a mix of buffalo, plains game and, in the right places, nyala — more structured than a Valley block, wilder than a small ranch.

What Makes Zimbabwe Unique

Zimbabwe’s hunting map is a patchwork of state concessions, private conservancies, ranches and CAMPFIRE communal areas. A Dande buffalo hunt, a Matetsi elephant hunt, and a Midlands plains-game week are all “Zimbabwe” and none of them predict the others.

The Zambezi Valley (Dande, Chewore-adjacent hunting country, and related blocks) is hot, thick, and dedicated to tracking buffalo and taking elephant where quota exists. The north-west around Hwange/Matetsi is teak and Kalahari sand with its own elephant and buffalo story. The south-east Lowveld is conservancy country — wildlife as a land use on a grand private scale after the ranching years.

Practicalities: USD is widely used in tourism; firearm import is established with the right invitation; malaria is a Valley and Lowveld fact. Political headlines are not the same as camp-level reality — use an outfitter who is currently operating the block they sell, this season.

Use these hunting regions when you enquire:

Zambezi Valley (Mashonaland Central / north)

Dande and neighbouring Valley blocks: mopane, jesse, riverine. Buffalo and elephant country. Heat, tsetse in places, and walking. The Zimbabwe hunt many dangerous-game hunters mean. Fly or long drive from Harare.

Matetsi and Hwange / north-west

Teak woodland and Kalahari sand toward Victoria Falls and Hwange. Elephant, buffalo, plains game. Often combined with Falls tourism — still a proper hunting concession, not a hotel day trip.

South-east Lowveld (Save, Malilangwe fringe, Gonarezhou area)

Conservancies and concessions: buffalo, plains game, nyala in the right thicket, and a more lodge-based feel than the Valley. Masvingo / south-east access. Outstanding when you book a real conservancy, ordinary when you do not.

Matabeleland ranches and south-west

Bulawayo hinterland: mixed ranch hunting, some excellent plains game, and a drier climate. Can be a better first Zimbabwe hunt than the Valley if you want less heat and simpler logistics.

Midlands and Mashonaland ranches

Central plateau farms: kudu, sable on some properties, plains game, and easier winters. Useful for mixed bags and hunters who are not chasing a Valley buffalo.

CAMPFIRE communal areas

Community hunting areas with elephant or buffalo quota in some districts. The hunt supports local wildlife income. Camp style and trophy expectations vary — ask direct questions about the ward and the current quota.

Seasons, quotas and open species change by concession and year. Confirm current rules with your outfitter before you book.

Best Time to Hunt Zimbabwe

The hunting season typically runs April or May through October, with some variation by land type. Dry-season tracking in the Valley is the standard: grass down, buffalo on water, elephant on known routes.

June–August is the most comfortable in much of the country. The Valley is still hot by anyone’s home-climate standards. September–October hunts well and tests your heat tolerance. November rains begin to close camps.

Victoria Falls and Harare are the usual international gates. Build a night in town if you are connecting to a bush strip. Do not schedule a Valley hunt to start three hours after a long-haul landing.

Zimbabwe-Specific Advice

Book the block, not the brand “Zimbabwe.”

Get the concession name
Dande, Matetsi, Save, a named CAMPFIRE ward, or a ranch. If the seller cannot name the ground, keep looking.
Money and deposits
Use outfitters with a clear, conventional deposit trail. USD cash still appears in country; do not make that your only plan for the whole trophy fee.
Malaria in the Valley and Lowveld
Prophylaxis for Valley, Lowveld and Zambezi-adjacent hunts. Highveld ranches are lower risk — still take medical advice.
Rifle import
Established process with an invitation letter and police permit. Start early. A .375 minimum for buffalo is the normal professional expectation.

Hunting in Zimbabwe — Common Questions

Established concessions operate every season with visiting hunters. Use a current operator, follow camp rules, and judge the specific area. Valley fly-camps and Harare suburbs are different conversations.

Valley: hotter, thicker, more tracking, more “classic.” Lowveld: often more lodge comfort, mixed bags, conservancy rules. Both can be excellent. They are not the same week.

Available on quota in some areas, with CITES and home-country import as a separate hurdle. Confirm both before you book.

A Matabeleland or Midlands plains-game hunt can work. A first-ever safari as a 10-day Valley buffalo hunt is a steep classroom. Many hunters do South Africa or Namibia first, then Zimbabwe dangerous game.
