Beyond the Doubt: Proving Women Belong in Dangerous Game Hunting

According to Safari Club International, Libby Gear recounted her introduction to hunting dangerous African animals in an article. As a child she accompanied her father on hunts. At fifteen years of age she participated in a Cape buffalo pursuit together with her sister who was seventeen. Over the course of one week the pair dealt with a charging animal, executed two effective stalks, and discharged in excess of thirteen bullets at a pair of buffalo with every projectile striking its target. This event sparked her interest in pursuing large felines. Opportunity arose in June of 2025 for a lion hunt which she completed successfully by taking an animal. Gear noted that women hunters sometimes confront issues beyond the activity itself including smaller physical size, use of reduced caliber firearms, and being undervalued prior to entering the field. The lion experience provided insights into her own abilities and those of women generally in dangerous game hunting. Safari Club International associates the account with its convention occurring January 20 through 23 of 2027 in Nashville.
