According to Dallas Safari Club, Larry traveled to Jeff Rice's Buck and Bass Ranch the day after receiving a call about a potential encounter with a sizable wild hog. The hunters positioned themselves near a bait site that a mature male had been using. Larry carried a revolver chambered for .454 Casull, specifically a Taurus Raging Hunter model equipped with a Thompson Center scope of 2.5-7x28 magnification, loaded with Hornady ammunition of 200 grain MonoFlex design. His purpose included checking how that projectile would fare against the hog's tough outer protection.
They remained motionless for several minutes using insect repellent devices. A dark colored hog displaying tusks then came into view from the left side. Once the animal presented its side, Larry discharged the firearm aiming at the area behind the front leg. The hog jumped and ran into thick cover. Evidence of bleeding appeared on both flanks of the trail almost immediately, confirming the bullet had gone all the way through. The pair followed and found the hog after walking approximately thirty paces. Later at their base they started looking inside the chest.
