Acinonyx jubatus

The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) is the world's fastest land mammal, capable of reaching speeds over 60 mph in short sprints across open terrain. Adults typically measure 3. 5 to 4. 5 feet in body length with a tail adding 2 to 2. 5 feet, standing 28 to 35 inches at the shoulder. Males weigh 80 to 140 pounds and females 75 to 100 pounds. They have a lean, long-legged build, small rounded head, and distinctive black tear marks running from the eyes to the mouth. The coat is tawny to golden with solid black spots, lacking the rosettes seen on leopards. Cheetahs prefer open grasslands, savannas, and semi-arid plains where they can use their speed to chase prey such as gazelles and impala. They are mostly diurnal, hunting by day, and rely on keen eyesight rather than ambush tactics. Unlike other big cats they do not roar, live in small groups or as solitary animals, and generally avoid confrontation. Their current range is mainly fragmented populations across eastern and southern Africa, with a tiny remnant group in Iran. Habitat loss and human conflict have greatly reduced their numbers. Cheetahs are rarely pursued by hunters. They hold Vulnerable status on the IUCN Red List, with some subspecies critically endangered, and legal hunting is prohibited or extremely limited throughout their range. Their light bone structure and non-aggressive nature also make them poor trophy animals compared with lions or leopards. Ethical operators and conservation-minded hunters therefore focus on more abundant, legally huntable species while supporting habitat protection that benefits all African wildlife.
