The vervet monkey is a widespread African primate known for its adaptability and frequent encounters with people in rural and agricultural areas. Adults typically stand 40 to 60 cm in body length with a similarly long tail and weigh 3. 5 to 8 kg, males being noticeably larger and more robust than females. The coat is a grizzled gray-olive, set off by a black face surrounded by white cheek and brow hair. Mature males display a vivid blue scrotum and red penis, features that are unmistakable in the field. These monkeys occupy savanna, woodland, riverine forest and even suburban edges across eastern and southern Africa, from Ethiopia and Somalia through Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique down to South Africa and Namibia. They live in mixed-sex troops of 10 to 50 animals, are strictly diurnal, and spend much of the day foraging in trees and on the ground for fruit, leaves, seeds, insects and small vertebrates. Their intelligence and boldness make them notorious crop raiders, which often brings them into conflict with farmers. For hunters they present a fast, wary, treetop target that demands quick, accurate shooting. Because they are commonly regarded as problem animals rather than classic trophies, they are typically taken under pest-control or special permits rather than as part of a conventional safari. The species remains listed as Least Concern by the IUCN thanks to its large range and numbers, though local populations can decline where habitat is lost or persecution is intense.
